Genre: Science Fiction/ Fantasy

What's it about?

Nemesis is a Diabolic. Created to protect a galactic Senator's daughter, Sidonia. There's no one Nemesis wouldn't kill to keep her safe. But when the power-mad Emperor summons Sidonia to the galactic court as a hostage, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia.

She must become her.

Now one of the galaxy's most dangerous weapons is masquerading in a world of corruption and Nemesis has to hide her true abilities or risk everything. As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns that there is something stronger than her deadly force: the one thing she's been told she doesn't have - humanity. And, amidst all the danger, action and intrigue, her humanity might be the only thing that can save her, Sidonia and the entire Empire...

The Review

“Perhaps scorpions were the only ones who could save each other.

Whatever lay ahead, it would always be the two of us above the rest of the universe, and woe to any who dared step in our path.”
― S.J. Kincaid, The Diabolic
In the name of transparency and honesty, I have to start out by saying that I completely understand people who DNF'd this book. It took me so much longer than I anticipated to even reach the middle of the book, because the beginning felt so nauseatingly slow. This was not the fast paced page turner I expected to delve into, but as I made it toward the end I realised that it wasn't horrible either. I'm not sure if that's just because I put so much time into it that my brain refuses to let me see it as a waste, but I'm glad that I pushed past the first half of the book. Because as it turns out, the second half was exactly what I was hoping to find. It is, however, unfortunate that I had to be more than 200 pages in before the story started exciting me. I will also add that the whole plot was predictable to me. I'm not sure if it was the twists that were made too obvious from the beginning or if I was just paying really close attention. But all of the key moments were things that I had anticipated as soon as a character was introduced. I think we can all agree that we'd rather not have that experience while picking up a new book.  With my initial thoughts aside, I think it's time to break this puppy down.
(Disclaimer: No real puppies were harmed in the making of this review)

The Setting:

This book was set in space and if you're familiar with the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer then you will find the atmosphere really familiar in a sense. I can't put my finger on what it was exactly, but the whole time I was reading this I was constantly reminded of Meyer's series. Not that it's a good or bad thing, it's just something worth noting. The setting did play a role in a few scenes and it managed to add to the tension at times, but there was nothing that really stood out to me about the world they were living in. The only time I was paying attention to the setting was when they ended up on a planet called Lumina. The description of lightning bolts that set trees on fire was a great moment because it showed just how these people who lived on space ships were used to artificial living environments where things like bugs, rain and weather elements were created to suite specific needs and machinery that allowed them to emulate nature without the negative and uncontrollable elements that come along with it. Seeing nature organically from the perspective of Nemesis somehow reminded me of what a privilege and a risk it is to get to experience it at all. It just highlighted the beauty in a subtle moment that I enjoyed.

The characters:

Unfortunately, I think what bothered me the most about this book had to do with the characters. Diabolics like Nemesis, bonded with their owner and by doing so they protect them and love them (a weird form of love) with everything they had. The way this was written, however, had me recoiling from New Moon induced PTSD. The whole 'imprinting' aspect made things incredibly over dramatic at times and also a bit too predictable. I didn't like the relationship between Sidonia and Nemesis in the first half of the book, because Sidonia came off as incredibly childish and she came across as this 'object' that everyone needed to protect. As the story unfolded however the relationship became more natural. I didn't find it annoying anymore, but they didn't make me feel anything at all, which might be worse?

I enjoyed Cygna, the Emperor's mother. She was a worthier antagonist than the Emperor who in fact bored me with his incredibly dumb decisions. Like Geoffrey in GOT, only much less entertaining.

The character I liked most though is hands down Tyrus, the emperor's nephew. He didn't manage to surprise me, but he was the smartest potato and I applaud him for that. He also seemed the most developed. I was rooting for him and I was against him on various occasions. Basically, I just wanted to hug him lots.

Romance:

Okay, raise your hand if you didn't see this one coming from the first time Nemesis meets the love interest as a virtual Avatar. For the most part I wasn't against this relationship, but it did become annoying when everyone wanted to sacrifice their lives for Nemesis on several occasions. I don't know, does not wanting to die make you a bad person? Because that's the feeling I got from this story. Everyone wanted to die at some stage or they wanted to sacrifice their life for someone who was constantly trying to become a sacrifice.

The actual relationship in the story that was focused on however did make me feel the things which was great, but in a second love kind of way. Like I enjoyed it, but it didn't blow me away and I don't think it will last either despite the many declarations of undying love...

Final thoughts:

It took me a long time to get into this one and even once I got into it, I wasn't exactly blown away. It had lots of tropes that a less avid reader might see and really enjoy, but it just wasn't the ruthless heart pounding story that I thought I had signed up for.
Rating: 2.5 / 5

Who should read the book?

If you don't read that much Science Fiction Fantasy then you might find this book really entertaining. If I couldn't see the twists for what they were I would have had a much better time with this read. Also, if you find the first half to drag a little but you don't like not finishing books then hold on until the second half and I promise you you'll be so much more entertained.

Fine, I admit it. I might be more than a little obsessed with Leigh Bardugo's writing. She has the most amazing dialogue in all of her books and I sing her praises so often that I think people don't take me seriously anymore. So, because I'm stubborn and annoying in the sense that I want everyone to agree with me I decided to do a thing.
The only way I thought I could make more people believe me without forcing every single person to read her books, was to just show you some of my favourite lines from her Grisha Trilogy and her Six of Crows duology.

Now, I'm not saying you'll love them all but if you don't like at least one of them then we probably can't be friends anymore..Okay, manipulation tactics aside. I really do hope you enjoy them as much as I do! If there are quotes that you really loved that I left out of this list, comment them down below and we can both just marvel at the awesomeness together!

“Kaz leaned back. "What's the easiest way to steal a man's wallet?"
"Knife to the throat?" asked Inej.
"Gun to the back?" said Jesper.
"Poison in his cup?" suggested Nina.
"You're all horrible," said Matthias.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows

“It's not natural for women to fight."
"It's not natural for someone to be as stupid as he is tall, and yet there you stand.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows

“Jesper knocked his head against the hull and cast his eyes heavenward. “Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I’m going to get Wylan’s ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost.”
Brekker’s lips quirked. “I’ll just hire Matthias’ ghost to kick your ghost’s ass.”
“My ghost won’t associate with your ghost,” Matthias said primly, and then wondered if the sea air was rotting his brain.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows
➵
“The problem with wanting," he whispered, his mouth trailing along my jaw until it hovered over my lips, "is that it makes us weak.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone

“Maybe there were people who lived those lives. Maybe this girl was one of them. But what about the rest of us? What about the nobodies and the nothings, the invisible girls? We learn to hold our heads as if we wear crowns. We learn to wring magic from the ordinary. That was how you survived when you weren’t chosen, when there was no royal blood in your veins. When the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom

“Na razrusha'ya. I am not ruined. E'ya razrushost. I am ruination.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Ruin and Rising
➷
“Have any of you wondered what I did with all the cash Pekka Rollins gave us?"
"Guns?" asked Jesper.
"Ships?" queried Inej.
"Bombs?" suggested Wylan.
"Political bribes?" offered Nina. They all looked at Matthias. "This is where you tell us how awful we are," she whispered.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom

“Why won’t you leave me alone?” I whispered one night as he hovered behind me while I tried to work at my desk.

Long minutes passed. I didn’t think he would answer. I even had time to hope he might have gone, until I felt his hand on my shoulder.

“Then I’d be alone, too," he said, and he stayed the whole night through, till the lamps burned down to nothing.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Siege and Storm

“I don’t hold a grudge. I cradle it. I coddle it. I feed it fine cuts of meat and send it to the best schools. I nurture my grudges, Rollins.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom
➵
“I hope you weren't looking to me to be the voice of reason. I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Ruin and Rising

“I don't like this."
"To be fair, Matthias, you don't like much.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom

“You know the problem with heroes and saints, Nikolai?" I asked as I closed the book's cover and headed for the door. "They always end up dead.”

― Leigh Bardugo, Siege and Storm

➶

“I want you to stay. I want you to … I want you.” “You want me.” She turned the words over. Gently, she squeezed his hand. “And how will you have me, Kaz?” He looked at her then, eyes fierce, mouth set. It was the face he wore when he was fighting. “How will you have me?” she repeated. “Fully clothed, gloves on, your head turned away so our lips can never touch?”<...>“I will have you without armour, Kaz Brekker. Or I will not have you at all.”

― Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows

“He'd broken his leg dropping down from the rooftop. The bone didn't set right, and he'd limped ever after. So he'd found himself a Fabrikator and had his cane made. It became a declaration. There was no part of him that was no broken, that had not healed wrong, and there was no part of him that was not stronger for having been broken.”

I know that January is basically at its end and that most people have made their new year’s resolutions on the first day of 2018, but I’m messy and I’m almost always late to the party. The following list, however, is not so much littered with resolutions as it is littered with random bookish and non-bookish related goals that I want and need to tick off this year. If it’s not geared toward my career goals then it most probably is a necessary element toward stabilising my sanity. Did someone say Xanax?
I’m kidding, that’s why we have alcohol and ice-cream...duh
Still kidding guys, come on, give me some credit. Ice-cream is way too unhealthy...
Okay, I’ll stop now... (Don’t do drugs)
  1. Anyway.....Firstly, I have to start with one of the most necessary and tickworthy things on this list. And oh boy, will this be great for my mental health and my sanity in 2018. As of February 1st, 2018, I will officially be moving out of the house that I’ve been sharing with three other boys for the past year of my life. That’s right, I’m finally going to have my own space, and eventhough it’s but small, it will be fierce as hell hahaha. Most of you might not understand my eagerness, but if you have any male siblings or if you’ve ever had to share your space with strangers then you’ll get it and I’m sure you’re crying happy tears for me right now – they are very much appreciated <3

  1. Secondly, and maybe the most important thing on this list that has to do with my future career prospects. I won’t go into detail, because I have way too much to say and to be honest, I don’t know you well enough to be baring my soul right now, sorry about that. Maybe once I’ve reached goal number five on this list (not a spoiler). This goal can be shortened into one sentence; Not where I am today, but where I’ve found I want to be.
  2. I have to follow that very dramatic one liner with a goal that combines career growth and personal growth elements. Ah yes, This goal involves me finally finishing the novel I wrote during Nanowrimo last year. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I was when I first came upon the idea for The Wolf and The Owl. I ploughed through the first half of writing it as fast as I possibly could while drinking copious amounts of coffee and energy drinks to keep the momentum going late into the evening. Now, I’ve made it to the dreaded middle point and I need to force myself to sit down and get the words done. I don’t feel too bad though, because I know that this happens. It’s a thing, and I’m not crazy or stupid or lazy... I’m doing a normal thing, but I still need to get the hell over it because it might be normal in the sense that we all experience this passivity, but there’s no way around it if you don’t get through it. So number three, is to finish writing, editing, and getting my WIP beta read by readers. It’s a lot, but if you’re going to dream you might as well dream big. Amiright??
  3. Of course, this would also be on my list, as I’m sure you all predicted. Give yourself a cookie, because this girl needs to finish her TBR pile! Or at least get 50 books read this year. That’s not too ambitious, I’ve seen some incredible Goodreads goals that I know people will completely annihilate, but I will eat my humble pie and just do the best I can with the time that I have available.
  4. With that being said... My blog you guys!! I’m really making it my goal to get this blog to work like a well oiled machine, where I upload two posts a week. They can be posts about anything, as long as I continue to force myself to do the things that I love. I love writing about books and reading books or posts about books, but I always convince myself that I need to focus on the things that matter in the ‘real world’. Like work deadlines, getting enough rest for the work week or whatever else I can think of at the time. Yes, those things are important, but so is this community and so are the things that bring me joy. It’s easy to get too stressed when you’re starting out in your career. You’re constantly wondering if you’re doing enough, if what you’re doing will help you maintain your lifestyle and carve out a way of becoming your livelihood. Things become messy and sometimes you just want to push aside the things that aren’t that urgent, because you believe that the more stressful something is, the more important it must be. This is wrong, this is not healthy and I’m not condoning it this year. My goal for 2018 is to focus on the things that make me happy, to take pictures of books, to review books, meet more people in this community and to continue sharing the love with anyone willing and excited enough to listen.

Are there any things that you would like to tick off this year? Are there things that you are excited about or even too nervous to take on? I know that this year will be great because I say it will be. I’m looking forward to all of the hurdles that I might have to jump over and I’m looking forward to all the times that will make me cry tears of joy. There will be lots of days where I might even just be in between at times, and I’m excited for those days too. I’ve come to learn that these are the times I’ll be looking back on when I’m older – the same way I’m looking back on my younger years. I know that if I could go back, I would change a few things and I don’t want that to be the same case this time around. If I accomplish just one thing this year, I want to be able to look back and know that it made me happy and that my heart was full. If I get to do that, then 2018 would be anything but a waste.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
publisher/year:September 18th 2012 by Scholastic Press
genre: Fantasy

What’s it about?

‘There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve. Either you’re his true love... or you killed him.’

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon to be dead walk past. Blue never sees them-until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks to her.

His name is Gancey, and he’s a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul whose emotions range from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She doesn't believe in true love and never thought this would be a problem. But as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

The Review

I went into this book very cavalier in some ways because I’ve read one book by Maggie Stiefvater in the past, Shiver,  and I walked away less than enthused about the rest of that specific series which lead to me not wanting to pick up the rest of the books and avoiding Maggie’s work all together. After starting The Raven Boys on my 12 hour bus ride home from university I soon found that it definitely will not be the case this time around!

The Raven Boys is fast paced with plot twists almost around every corner. I simply couldn't get enough of it. Just when I thought that I knew what was going to happen Maggie turns around and has me fail miserably but that is what I really appreciated about this book. The blurb on the back of the novel should be rewritten in my opinion because it sells the whole story short. What I expected to be an insta-love Edward and Bella rendition turned out to be a lot more with characters that I found myself investing in, rooting for and at times confused by.

Maggie did a terrific job with each and every one of these characters, I felt like I knew them all. I also loved the fact that the book was written in third person which meant that we were given an inside whirl inside most of the characters thoughts at random moments throughout the book. It kept everything very exciting and it made the reader, character bond so much easier to form or the reader hate character bond (some characters had major issues that I simply could not deal with).

The protagonist Blue is a sixteen year old girl with major boy problems and a house filled to the brim with psychics, her mother included. Blue however was not graced with the gift the rest of the women had but she some how magnified their gifts which made her as they put it the Starbucks table everyone had to have, near the plug. Obviously this was not what Blue wanted, she wanted to see more than we mere mortals which is what made her reconsider her policy towards boys, specifically the Raven Boys and I must say I’m so glad she does think twice.

Why you may ask? Because A; Adam and B; they are a crazy bunch of boys but weirdly troubled which is something I really appreciated. The friendship between Gansey, Adam, Ronan and Noah is one that can be admired. Even though I found it a little weirdly intimate at times I could see that it was raw and real which is what fuelled my Maggie appreciation. Let’s just say I’m a fan.

There is one thing however that I didn’t appreciate. Seeing that this is such a crucial element and that I’m willing or more than willing actually to continue with this series I advise you to not read too much into my last impression but I feel it must be said. The ending left me seriously dumbfounded and not in a good way. Compared to the rest of the novel the ending and the climax was rushed and confusing!  My feelings toward one of the characters were seriously called into question but before I knew it, everything was over and I seemed to be the only one confused as to why things were being swept under the rug and everything was back to normal again? Seriously? That’s it? I understand that this is a series and that some things have to remain unsaid but with two chapters remaining you can’t tell me that you couldn’t spare a few sentences to clear up the mess?

Ahhh anyway...I don’t want to go into too much detail because I don’t want to spoil any of the major plot twists that left me reeling and very much devouring the story word for word! I will say that this book takes psychics, magic, death and (weirdly enough) energy lines to a whole new level that the possibility of each of those things seem a lot more plausible (Thanks for the nightmares btw).

Who do I recommend this to?

If you like food or air than I definitely recommend this to you! Haha if that’s too broad than I’ll recommend this to people who love paranormal books in general and books where love and romance plays a role but it doesn’t completely dominate the story. I for one had a blast and I’m sure you will too.:)

Have you read this book? What were your thoughts? Also if you have read the rest of the series let me know if they get bad or if they stay this awesome? I don't want to be dissapointed :(

About the Author

New York Times bestselling author of The Shiver Trilogy, The Raven Cycle, and The Scorpio Races. Artist. Driver of things with wheels. Avid reader.

All of Maggie Stiefvater's life decisions have been based around her inability to be gainfully employed. Talking to yourself, staring into space, and coming to work in your pajamas are frowned upon when you're a waitress, calligraphy instructor, or technical editor (all of which she's tried), but are highly prized traits in novelists and artists. She's made her living as one or the other since she was 22. She now lives an eccentric life in the middle of nowhere, Virginia with her charmingly straight-laced husband, two kids, two neurotic dogs, and a 1973 Camaro named Loki.

Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini
Publisher/year: 2014 PanMacmillian
Genre: Fantasy/ Sci-fi

What’s it about?
Lily Proctor is allergic to virtually everything, and growing up in Salem she’s never been able to do the things her friends take for granted... which is why she’s determined to enjoy her first (and perhaps only) high-school party. But Lily’s life never goes according to plan, and after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class when she wishes she could just disappear – she does.
Suddenly Lily is in a different Salem- a terrifying new world where she is overwhelmed by new desires and new experiences, and her weakness is replaced with extraordinary power. She soon discovers that this world is ruled by dark and powerful witches, and that the strongest and cruellest of all is LIlian... Lily’s identical other self in this alternate universe. Trown into war she doesn’t understand, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can’t hope to shoulder alone, and a love she never expected.
But how can Lily be the saviour of this world when she is literally her own worst enemy?

The Review

There comes a day when every girl loses the stars in her eyes. And then she can see clearly.
This is Lily’s day.

Unlike the quote above I can not exactly pin point when the stars in my eyes were lost while reading this book but I can confidently guess that it had been somewhere in the beginning. I’m strangely disappointed that I didn’t like this book and it’s not because it was badly written or just plain horrible because it was none of the above it just wasn’t for me I guess.
The story was weird but interesting! I’ve always found witchy books to be AMALZING! (Yes I know it’s spelled wrong, but doesn’t that just sound better?NO?OK) Witches are bad ass and if they existed I think feminism would never even have played a role in our society but alas they’re not real and feminism has to exist so we don't all lose our minds. I digress. Witches! Yes, they are awesome but even though this book is set in two different Salems and instead of witches being wrongly persecuted - scientists and doctors were in their shoes instead. I didn’t really get the whole witchy vibe.

This might be because Trial by Fire was both a fantasy and a science fiction book and although I admire the fact that Josephine tried something different the two just didn’t match in my opinion.

The Setting: The novel was set up in two different Salems but most of the story took place in the second Salem after Lily, the main character, stupidly agreed to leave her world for another because of a boy. Leaving behind her sister, Juliet, to manage on her own with their sick mother. Sigh, I’ll get to them later! Anyway, the first Salem was basically just a normal town in the 21st century but the second... I have no idea where that was supposed to be and neither did our protagonist. People were wearing gowns like kings and queens in the olden days while there were genetically engineered monsters running about? Ok so the monsters, also known as the Woven, weren’t created through science but still it didn’t mesh well. The setting and the costumes almost made it seem like the author wasn’t really sure what to do so she basically just did everything that popped into her head. Uhm confused much? Because I am!

The characters: Ahh Lilly. I don’t know where to start with this one. Our protagonist does have some redeeming qualities but all through out the novel her childishness and fragility worked on my nerves. Even when she lost the right to be called fragile she still managed to hang on to the title of number one damsel in distress which is not something I appreciated. I absolutely loathed her double Lillian but at least she had some back bone. Lilly was described as stubborn but she was almost stupidly stubborn and I honestly couldn’t deal! Over all I found it hard to really connect with the characters. Most of the characters were very one dimensional. If a character was bad you rarely saw any other side of them which bothered me because as we all know people are rarely born bad and neither are characters! It’s good to show both sides or just the origin of the assy-ness. Am I wrong?

Romance: This was not an ista-love kinda book which I appreciated but you pretty much knew off the bat who Lilly would be falling for and as most YA love stories begin for some reason it started out of a mutual fiery hate. Rowan, also known as Mr. Love is the typical brooding but handsome love interest. This didn’t surprise me at all and once the obvious chemistry, which was a tad bit forced, reached its maximum peek their love was down right irritating. Edward and Bella anyone? Sigh, and it started out so promising. (Bows head in defeat)
And if the love between those two wasn’t forced enough they had to throw in a second Mr. Love who is the double of Lilly’s best friend back in her own world. I suppose this was made with the intent to have us thinking will they won’t they but it did nothing of the sort. He could have just been a friend Josephine!

Final thoughts: As I mentioned earlier guys I really did want to like this book but getting through it was more like a chore than anything else I went back to reading the first chapter of Fangirl simply for enjoyments sake. Trial by Fire had a very interesting concept, I’m just bummed that it wasn’t carried out better. Because this was the first book of the World Walker Trilogy there was way too much explaining going on and the worst part is even after all the explaining I was still scratching my head like what? The book wasn’t written badly though and I do think that others might enjoy it a lot more than I did. I looked up a few other reviews and some people were really into it so I guess this one is more of a personal preference read. Sadly I will not be continuing with this trilogy.

Who Should Read this Book?

This book is for people who like very complicated worlds that don’t really care whether they make sense or not (the characters are what they are after) and enjoy reading books where there is a strong over arching love interest where you are teased until you basically want to smash their faces together out of frustration.  If you liked reading The Maze Runner by James Dashner you will find the familiarity of the Woven quite comforting and you will enjoy this book

It's funny how our very first decision in life was based on hope. A hope that we wouldn't fall, that we'd make friends on the first day of school, that the boy we liked actually liked us back, and some 20 odd years later... We'd still be here, hoping that all those decisions we made, with the little we knew of what was still to come in the future - would eventually lead us to where we want to be - now that we do have most of the answers, but the time for choosing has passed.
I think about this more than I probably should and it continues to blow my mind that I could be someone completely different if I had chosen differently.
One thing that would be the same though, no matter where I ended up or who else I could have been. I would still be somewhere, hoping that I somehow made the right choices..🦉🍃🍃🍃

The strange and beautiful sorrows of Ava lavender by Leslye Walton
Publisher/ year: 2014 Walker Books
Genre: Magical realism, contemporary

'I truly love you' Anna thought as she lay awake next to Peter, his chest rising and falling to the rhythm of her own. A smile tugs at her lips as a tiny snore rippled through his body, it was the kind of snoring she could wake up to every morning. She caught herself smiling and staring at him unaware so often it made her nervous. Even though they had been together for more than two years she could never get rid of that nervous feeling. The one you get when you realize that you actually had something to lose, something other people would want. Because who wouldn't want to wake up to this, the snoring, the love, the feeling of contentment. No, she had reason to be nervous. The smile slipped from her lips as she thought about the way she was looking at him, the way she always looked at him. As if he was the sun. As if he held the most beautiful constellations in his eyes. As if he were a cosmic explosion, terrifyingly beautiful, possibly unreal, something she could fall and disappear into. Her chest grew tight and she fought against the negative thoughts that tried to slip into her mind, the ones that asked what if and until. No, she pushed them all the way to the back of her mind, leaned in closer and kissed him lightly on the lips before she turned back around and drowned in the bliss of his snoring, the love, the feeling of contentment...

'I don't want to wake up' Peter thought as he felt Anna's eyes on him and the light kiss she placed on his lips before she mercifully turned around and went back to sleep. More than two years of waking up next to someone held a lot of room for repetitiveness. That's what his life has become, a series of rituals and habits. He would wake up and tell her that he loved her even though he wasn't sure he still knew what that meant or if it was true or not. Wasn't love something you were supposed to want to wake up to? He opened his eyes slowly, making sure that Anna wouldn't see that he was awake because he needed the time to himself. A time before the lying begins. He looks at the hairs curled down the nape of her neck, the steady movement of her breathing and wondered when the thought of her next to him stopped making him happy. She always looked so content and happy when she saw him, her eyes practically lit up. He wished he could tell her to just stop, stop loving me! Stop taking away reasons I can use to leave you. Because he wants to leave so badly but he knows if he does it would break her and you can't just break someone if they don't give you a reason to. Or could you? At this point he didn't even care about it that much. She would be leaving soon and then he could break her. It would be easier over the phone anyway he thought as he pictured her tear stained face, the betrayal in her eyes as her soul turned bitter in front of him. No, he would wait. He could deal with a few more days of false I love you's and the repetitiveness of it all. Peter closed his eyes and turned away from her. Cursing the fact that he couldn't see the same stars in her eyes that he knew she saw in his. She wasn't his sun and she wasn't made out of constellations. She was soggy bread eaten out of hunger next to dying candle light. Necessary but not enough, never enough.
